Target Fireworks

The grand finale (as always) at Aquatennial is the beloved Target Fireworks, considered one of the top 5 annual displays in the country. The evening always kicks off with the Pre-Fireworks Festivities from 6-10 pm, and this year it included four bands performing consecutively including Heart & Soul Drum Academy, theStone Arch Isles, the Great Lakes Navy Band, and The Grateful RED—an always-popular group of Target employees who play an incredible Big Band set. There were food trucks and treats along West River Parkway. There was also a ramped-up kids zone near the Stone Arch Bridge featuring a mini-water slide, a Keys 4/4 Kids ‘Paint a Piano’, a Crayola Experience, face painting/Henna Tattoos, a Timberwolves/Lynx booth, a Gopher Athletics booth, and more.

Then, at 10 pm, the Target Fireworks kicked off from the 3rd Avenue Bridge with perhaps its best version yet. The 20+ minute show It was intricately set to music, and the ‘pyromusical’ was simulcast on Go 95.3 FM (due to the Twins game going long—it was scheduled to be simulcast on Go 96.3 FM). The display featured odes to Weezer, Coldplay, and others. This year’s Target Fireworks also had a tribute to Prince with “Little Red Corvette.” The 2017 grand finale could be dubbed as one of the best Target Fireworks conclusions ever. This installment of the Target Fireworks was definitely not one to miss out on.

AquaJam

AquaJam was popular in the 1980s, and thanks to Fulton Beer and Familia Skateshop, it once again was a success in its second returning year in 2017. The event taking place at Boom Island featured a mini-ramp, a Skate your State ramp, rails, barrel jumps and more. AquaJam also featured a variety of food trucks and beverages. It was packed along the course as people watched talented local skaters, both young and old, try out different tricks. Cash prizes were handed out based on judges’ discretion of how difficult the trick was, and there was even a barrel-jumping competition where the winner cleared 11 barrels in a jump. This event was truly a one-of-a-kind experience for everyone involved.

Twin Cities Carifest

Twin Cities Carifest has been an annual staple of summer in Minneapolis for the past two decades, and it continued this year during Aquatennial on West River Road between the Plymouth and Broadway bridges. This event features Caribbean art, food, crafts, music and a traditional carnival parade with colorful costumes and dance. If you’ve never been before, it has really delicious items to try out. Plus, it is just across the Plymouth Bridge from AquaJam and just a mile and a half from the Target Fireworks preferred viewing area.

Candid Canines Film Festival

Our first ever Candid Canines Film Festival was wonderful! Target Field Station was full of dogs and their owners all night long! The 30 minute long film celebrating our favorite pets showed at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, & 8:30 pm. In between the showtimes, dogs visited a “pupperazzi” step-and-repeat red carpet area, which was a roaring success among the stars of the night.

Thanks to Can Do Canines for creating the film and helping put on this fantastic event. We’d also like to thank everyone and their dogs for coming out last night, we had so much fun!

That’s why this year the Aquatennial teamed with the American Red Cross, WCCO-TV, WCCO Radio, BUZ’N 102.9 and 104.1 JACK FM to host the Aquatennial Blood Drive this week. It runs through today from 9 am to 3 pm.

Donating Blood is important in helping those in need, as the Red Cross—which supplies blood to 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country—needs 14,000 blood donations each day to keep pace. Right now, there is a major shortage of blood as donations are being used as quickly as they come in. Vacations and summer plans often play a role in keeping people from donating, so any help you can provide is much appreciated.

Thursday’s Aquatennial Blood Drive took place at The Commons near Wells Fargo Towers in East Town. Thanks to those who took part and donated!

Loring Park Pre-Parade Family Fun Night

The annual Loring Park Pre-Parade Family Fun Night kicked off the evening festivities on Day 1 of the Aquatennial. It’s a great neighborhood gathering event that brings people together in Loring Park, one of our largest downtown green spaces. Nestled along the pond, the event includes Wilderness Inquiry Voyageur Canoe Rides free to the public so you can get a taste of what it’s like to be on the water gazing up at the downtown skyline. There were also Rally the Family tennis lessons from USTA Northern, which took place on the tennis courts in the heart of the park. Along with those two events, there were inflatable kids slides and play zones, a dance party, foods, beverages, pony rides, and more. It’s an event that really brings the Loring Park community together and sets the tone for a night of fun along Hennepin Avenue.

We avoided the rain and Ran With Fire last night at the Twin Cities Orthopedics Torchlight 5K! This magnificent event took place along Hennepin Avenue beginning at 7:30 pm, just before the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade. Runners and walkers took off from the Basilica of St. Mary and ended the race along the Mississippi Riverfront. Once completed, participants were able to enjoy a post-race party with food, beverages and entertainment. Thanks to all who participated in another great fitness event during Aquatennial—kicking off four days of activity during our Official Civic Celebration.

CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade

Despite multiple inclement weather concerns, the skies cleared to make for a beautiful night at the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade last night. The Aquatennial flagship event began at 8:30 pm near Basilica of St. Mary and ran along Hennepin avenue. Crowds amassed along Hennepin for the largest nighttime parade in the state of Minnesota early to grab their spots along the parade route. The parade featured new University of Minnesota Football Head Coach P.J. Fleck and his family as Grand Marshal, which was one of the top highlights of the entire evening.

The 2017 CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade featured over 80 units. The parade included law enforcement and public safety groups, various local local high school bands, Aquatennial Ambassadors and royalty, multiple University of Minnesota participants, AquaJesters, and a whole lot more!

We thank our sponsor CenterPoint Energy and everyone else who made this wonderful Aquatennial event possible last night. Thank you for coming out to enjoy the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade!

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck to Grand Marshal Aquatennial’s CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade

_U5Y7386The Minneapolis Aquatennial announced today that new University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck and his family will be the Grand Marshals of the 2017 CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade. Coach Fleck will help lead the largest nighttime parade in Minnesota on Wednesday, July 19 from 8:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.

“The company feels privileged to be a part of the great city and community of Minneapolis,” said Brad Tutunjian, CenterPoint Energy division Vice President of Gas Operations in Minnesota. “To celebrate the strong relationship between the company and those who reside in the communities we serve, CenterPoint Energy is pleased to be sponsoring the 78th annual CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade for the seventeenth consecutive year, providing safe, quality entertainment for all.”

As one of the biggest and brightest parades in the state of Minnesota, and a Minneapolis Aquatennial flagship event, this one-of-a-kind display will light up downtown Minneapolis with a procession of bands and entertainment units marching down Hennepin Avenue from the Basilica of St. Mary to 5th Street.

“My family and I are honored to be part of the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade,” said Minnesota head football coach P.J. Fleck. “Everyone has been so welcoming to us since we arrived in January, and I am looking forward to meeting more of our fans and embracing the local culture and traditions. I have heard wonderful things about this family-friendly event and how it helps bring a community together to celebrate our elite city of Minneapolis. I am excited to see all the decorative floats and parade units and to be part of the longstanding Aquatennial tradition. Ski-U-Mah and Row the Boat!”

The 2017 parade marks the 17th year that CenterPoint Energy has taken part in the Aquatennial festivities and sponsored the Torchlight Parade. The parade, along with the fellow flagship event Target Fireworks on Saturday, July 22 at 10 p.m., book-end four jam-packed days of Aquatennial events and programming that features more than two dozen free and family-friendly events throughout downtown and along the Mississippi Riverfront—where our city was born.

Aquatennial goers can get to the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade by bus or light rail for free thanks to Metro Transit, which is offering free ride passes from 4 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, July 19. Free ride passes are available to download at aquatennial.com/torchlightparade and must be printed for use on any bus or light rail train.

The Aquatennial has also partnered with the City of Minneapolis to bring Tap Minneapolis water fountains to the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade. These water stations will be available along Hennepin Avenue during the parade as well as the Twin Cities Orthopedics Torchlight 5K, which runs down Hennepin Avenue from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to the event and utilize the many fountains along the parade route for refills. CenterPoint Energy will also be handing out clip-on lights to lucky parade-goers throughout the evening.

“Aquatennial will again feature four days of free activities this year, and the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade is a great way to kick off the festivities,” said Aquatennial Festival Director Leah Wong. “There is something for all ages and abilities as we celebrate community and fun here in the heart of our city.”
Coach Fleck became the 30th coach in Gopher football history when he was hired on January 6. Fleck, 36, is one of the youngest and brightest minds in the game. He was named Mid-America Conference coach of the year in 2014 and 2016. He turned Western Michigan’s program around, turning a 1-11 Broncos team in 2013 during his first season into a 13-1 squad in 2016—winning the school’s first MAC championship since 1988 en route to a Cotton Bowl appearance.

Along with Coach Fleck, the parade will feature CenterPoint Energy’s famed mascots Buddy Blue Flame and Wanda Water Heater, marching bands, Minneapolis Aqua Jesters and more. K102 returns again this year to emcee the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade featuring their morning show hosts, Chris Carr & Company.

Before the parade, attend the Aquatennial’s Loring Park Family Fun Night from 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. featuring pony rides, inflatables, Wilderness Inquiry Voyageur Canoe Rides, USTA Northern Rally the Family tennis lessons, a kids dance, carnival games and more. Following Loring Park Family Fun Night will be the Twin Cities Orthopedics Torchlight 5K. Watch as thousands of runners take off down Hennepin Avenue beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The CenterPoint Energy is sure to ignite the Minneapolis night with more than 90 parade units and 75,000 spectators. For more information, please visit aquatennial.com or follow our @Aquatennial accounts on FacebookTwitter and Instagram using the hashtag #Aquatennial.
